TL;DR: Clear aligners are a family of orthodontic appliances. Invisalign uses a series of removable plastic trays. The Inman Aligner is a removable appliance with springs aimed at aligning front teeth. Suitability depends on the case, not the brand. This guide describes systems and does not compare them or rank them. This guide has 9 sections and answers 3 frequently asked questions. Facts were checked on 2026-10-13; it is educational information, not clinical advice.

What is a clear aligner?
A clear aligner is a removable orthodontic appliance that moves teeth without brackets or wires on the outside of the teeth. Most systems use a planned series of transparent trays. Patients typically wear them for much of the day, removing them to eat and clean their teeth.
How does Invisalign work?
Invisalign is a branded clear aligner system made by Align Technology. A clinician takes a digital scan or impressions, and software plans the tooth movements. The patient then receives a series of trays, changing to the next tray on a schedule the clinician sets, with review visits in between.
Invisalign variants exist for different case complexity, but the range of names changes. Ask the provider which variant applies.
What is the Inman Aligner?
The Inman Aligner is a removable appliance that uses springs to move the upper or lower front teeth, commonly for mild crowding of the front teeth. Treatment is usually shorter, but it is designed for limited movement and does not correct bite problems. A dentist decides whether it suits a case.
What other aligner systems exist?
Other systems include lab-made aligners from various manufacturers and dentist-designed trays. Names and features change over time. Providers should explain what system they use, who plans the tooth movement, and who is responsible for supervision.
What should I check before choosing an aligner?
- Whether a GDC-registered clinician examines you in person and supervises treatment.
- What the plan shows about the final tooth position.
- How many trays or months are expected.
- Which retainers follow, and their cost.
- What happens when the plan needs revising.
The GDC advises caution about remote-only aligner services that skip an in-person assessment. Compare the system against the case, not the marketing. See braces and Invisalign in Essex and retainers after braces.
Where can I find a provider?
Check registration on the GDC register. Read dentist-led versus specialist orthodontist for the difference in clinician types. You can browse Essex dentists in the Essex directory.
How many Essex practices list Invisalign?
Figures come from our directory snapshot of 331 published Essex practices (2026-09-30). “Lists” means the practice’s own website or Google listing mentions the service. It does not confirm the service is offered today, funded by the NHS, or that the practice is taking on patients.

What is the risk with aligners bought without an in-person check?
Aligner treatment depends on a clinician assessing gums, bone and bite before and during tooth movement. Postal models can skip the in-person examination. Ask who reviews progress, who you contact if a tooth feels loose, and who pays to correct problems.
Questions to ask before you pay
- Which GDC-registered clinician examines me, takes X-rays and signs off the plan? (name and GDC number)
- How often am I seen in person, and by whom?
- Is the final price in writing, including refinements and retainers?
- What happens if my teeth turn out not to be suitable?
- Who handles problems after treatment ends?
Directory pages for this topic: orthodontics (braces, Invisalign) in Colchester, orthodontics (braces, Invisalign) in Basildon and orthodontics (braces, Invisalign) in Braintree. Each lists only practices whose own websites mention the treatment; a mention is not proof of availability.
FAQ
Are clear aligners suitable for every case?
No. Complex bite or jaw problems may need fixed braces or specialist care.
Do aligners need retainers afterwards?
Yes, clinicians commonly advise retainers after any orthodontic treatment.
Can aligners be bought without seeing a dentist?
Some services offer this, but the GDC has raised concerns, and an in-person assessment is safer.
