TL;DR: Composite bonding uses tooth-coloured resin that a dentist shapes on the tooth and hardens with a light. It can repair chips, close small gaps, and reshape teeth, often without removing much enamel. It can stain, chip, or wear over time. Cost depends on the number of teeth, complexity, and clinician skill. This guide has 10 sections and answers 3 frequently asked questions. It lists 3 primary sources, from NHS.uk, the GDC and the BDA. Facts were checked on 2026-10-13; it is educational information, not clinical advice.

What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding is a treatment where a dentist applies tooth-coloured resin to a tooth, shapes it, and sets it with a curing light. It is used for chips, small gaps, worn edges, and uneven shapes. It is also used in routine fillings, but cosmetic bonding aims at appearance.

How is bonding done?

The dentist selects a shade, lightly roughens the tooth surface, applies bonding agent and resin in layers, sculpts it, and polishes it. Many cases need one visit and little or no anaesthetic. Some need slight enamel preparation, which the dentist should explain first.

What can bonding not fix?

Bonding suits small to moderate changes. Severe crowding, large gaps, or heavy discolouration may need orthodontics, whitening, crowns, or veneers. Bonding does not treat decay or gum disease, and those should be addressed first. See veneers types and longevity.

How long does bonding last?

Composite bonding does not last indefinitely. Longevity depends on the tooth, bite forces, oral hygiene, and habits such as nail biting, pen chewing, or teeth grinding. Composite can stain and may need repair or replacement. A dentist should describe what to expect and what maintenance involves.

What affects the cost of bonding?

Cost depends on the number of teeth, the complexity, the time needed, the materials, and the clinician’s experience. Cosmetic bonding is usually private. NHS fillings are a different matter and fall within Band 2. Check current fees on NHS.uk. This guide gives no prices, so compare itemised written quotes.

How should I care for bonded teeth?

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth, and attend hygiene and check-up visits. Avoid biting hard objects. A night guard may be advised for grinding. Ask about stain-causing foods and drinks.

How do I check a provider?

Confirm registration on the GDC register, and ask to see examples of similar work. For wider planning, see smile makeover and teeth whitening in the UK. You can browse Essex dentists in the Essex directory.

How many Essex practices list composite bonding?

Figures come from our directory snapshot of 331 published Essex practices (2026-09-30). “Lists” means the practice’s own website or Google listing mentions the service. It does not confirm the service is offered today, funded by the NHS, or that the practice is taking on patients.

When is bonding the wrong tool?

Bonding does not cure crowding that needs tooth movement. Heavy biting forces or grinding that will keep chipping the resin, and deep discolouration the resin cannot mask, also limit it. Ask whether the cause is being treated or only covered.

FAQ

Is bonding reversible?

Often it is more conservative than veneers, but check with your dentist whether enamel would be removed.

Does bonding whiten with the teeth?

No. Composite does not lighten with whitening gel, so whiten natural teeth first.

Is cosmetic bonding on the NHS?

Generally not. Clinically needed fillings may be.
