TL;DR: The Care Quality Commission (CQC) registers and inspects dental practices in England, but it does not give them a rating. The CQC says it does not have the legal power to rate some kinds of services, such as dental practices. A dental practice’s CQC page shows an inspection report built around five questions: is it safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. Read the report and its date. Do not expect an Outstanding, Good, Requires improvement or Inadequate label. This guide has 9 sections and answers 3 frequently asked questions. Facts were checked on 2026-10-13; it is educational information, not clinical advice.

What does the CQC do?

The CQC is the independent regulator of health and social care services in England. Dental practices that provide regulated activities must register with it. The CQC inspects services, publishes reports, and can take enforcement action where standards are not met.

Are dental practices given a CQC rating?

No. On its ratings page the CQC states that not all services on its website have ratings, because it does not have the legal power to rate some kinds of services, such as dental practices. A practice may therefore have a published inspection report without any rating. Be cautious of a practice that advertises a CQC “rating” or “grade”: check the CQC page yourself.

What are the five key questions?

CQC inspection summaries for dental practices say the inspector asks five questions:

  • Safe: are people protected from avoidable harm?
  • Effective: does care follow good practice and achieve good outcomes?
  • Caring: are staff kind and respectful?
  • Responsive: does the service meet people’s needs?
  • Well-led: is leadership and governance sound?

An inspection is led by a CQC inspector supported by a specialist dental adviser.

How do I find a practice’s CQC report?

Search the practice name on the CQC website at cqc.org.uk. The listing shows the registered provider, the location, and the latest inspection summary with its date. Compare the location’s address with the practice you plan to attend, because a provider may run several sites.

How should I read a CQC report?

Read the summary and the sections for each key question. Check the inspection date. Look for any breaches of regulations and what the practice was required to improve. A report from several years ago tells you less than a recent one. The report describes the regulated service, not the quality of every individual treatment.

What do CQC reports not tell me?

A CQC report does not confirm a clinician’s registration, NHS availability, or fees, and it gives no score to compare practices. Check the clinician on the GDC register. See how to check a dentist is GDC-registered and how to choose and check a dentist in Essex. You can browse Essex dentists in the Essex directory.

How many practices tell you about their CQC report?

Only 43 of 331 published Essex practices mention the CQC on their own websites. Most do not, so look the report up yourself rather than assuming it is displayed.

Is an old report still a current one?

The date matters. Staff or owners may have changed since the inspection. Check the inspection date, and whether the visit was a full inspection or a focused one.

How to read a report, in order

  1. The date of the latest inspection, and whether a newer one is listed.
  2. The findings under each of the five key questions.
  3. Any requirement notices or enforcement action.
  4. Whether the report names the same registered provider as the practice you will attend.

No. The CQC regulates services. The GDC regulates individual dental professionals.

Can I report a concern to the CQC?

Yes. The CQC accepts information from the public about services.
